Rooibos tea only grows naturally in one place on Earth, the Cederberg Mountains. While it’s not strictly impossible to grow the plant outside its native environment, other countries (such as Australia, the US, and China) that have attempted commercial cultivation have largely failed due to the plant’s very specific environmental and soil requirements, including a symbiotic relationship with local micro-organisms. So yes, it’s as uniquely South African as it gets!
