Choosing Joy in the Day the Lord Has Made
Our journey continues with Day 17 of fasting, and today’s scripture invites us into a place of intentional joy and gratitude.
Psalm 118:24 declares:
“This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
At first glance, it may seem like a simple verse — one we’ve heard many times, often spoken with a smile or sung in worship. But within these words lies a profound spiritual discipline, especially during a season of fasting: the choice to rejoice.
Joy Is an Act of Faith
“This is the day the Lord has made…”
This means today is not random.
It is not wasted.
It is not overlooked by heaven.
God crafted it with purpose, intention, and His presence woven into every moment. Even if the day brings challenges, uncertainty, or spiritual stretching, His sovereignty remains unshaken.
“…we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
This is not passive joy — it is active, deliberate, and often counter-cultural.
Rejoicing is not merely an emotional reaction; it is a faith-filled decision to recognize God’s goodness, even when circumstances do not yet reflect the breakthrough we’re believing for.
Fasting Opens the Door to Fresh Perspective
On Day 17, you may be feeling physically lighter, mentally clearer, or spiritually more aware. Or, you may be feeling the weight of the sacrifice and longing for strength. Wherever you are, Psalm 118:24 meets you with a gentle reminder:
Joy is not found in perfect conditions — it is found in God’s presence.
Fasting realigns our focus.
It softens our hearts.
It sharpens our spiritual senses.
And from that place, rejoicing becomes not just possible, but natural.
Gratitude Transforms the Day
When we choose to rejoice, something shifts:
- Anxiety loosens its grip.
- Heavy thoughts lose their power.
- Hope rises.
- God’s peace settles over us like a warm blanket.
Rejoicing doesn’t deny reality — it declares that God is greater than reality.
A Closing Reflection for Day 17
As you walk through this day, pause and breathe in the truth of Psalm 118:24.
Today is a gift.
A creation of God’s hands.
A doorway into His grace, His strength, and His joy.
Choose rejoicing.
Choose gladness.
Choose to see the beauty He placed in this very moment.
This is the day the Lord has made — rejoice in it
