Mom It#MomChatMonday #MomIt #ParentingRealTalk #lifelessons #teamworkAs parents, we spend so much time teaching our children about responsibility, respect and keeping their word. We encourage them to join activities, try new things, be part of a team and learn valuable life skills along the way.But one thing I've been thinking about lately is this...Are we teaching our children the importance of showing up, even when things don't go exactly as planned?Over the past while, I've seen just how much one person's commitment, or lack of it, can affect an entire team.In rugby, I've watched a handful of boys continue to show up for practice, put in the effort and give their best, even when the season became difficult and things didn't go as expected. Some travelled to games, only to face disappointment when the team couldn't come together as planned. Yet, those same boys kept showing up for practice, even when they weren't playing for the remainder of the season.In my son's Ninjutsu, I've seen how arriving late or regularly missing classes without notice can disrupt an entire group. It's not just about one child missing out on training. It affects the instructor, the flow of the lesson and every other child who arrived ready to learn.And then there's dance. I don't think everyone realises just how much teamwork goes into preparing for a performance. When someone doesn't arrive for rehearsals, someone else often has to step in. Teachers have to adjust, choreographers have to rethink things, and other dancers have to work around the changes.When people repeatedly don't show up, or commit to helping and then pull out without considering the impact, the extra responsibility doesn't simply disappear. It falls on someone else.And often, it's the people who have been showing up consistently who end up carrying the heaviest load.Now, don't get me wrong. Life happens!Children get sick. Emergencies come up. Family circumstances change. Sometimes we genuinely cannot honour a commitment, no matter how much we want to.That's life, and we need to give one another grace.But there's a difference between being unable to show up because life got in the way and repeatedly treating a commitment as optional when other people are depending on you.When we say yes to being part of a team, a group or an activity, our presence matters. Our effort matters. And if circumstances change, communicating honestly and giving people as much notice as possible matters too.Because commitment isn't only about turning up when it's convenient, when everything is going well or when we're getting exactly what we hoped for.Sometimes commitment means continuing to do your best when things are difficult. Sometimes it means putting the team's needs alongside your own. And sometimes it simply means being considerate enough to let others know when you can't be there.Our children are watching how we handle these things.They're learning from how we keep our promises, how we treat other people's time and how we respond when things don't go our way.We don't have to be perfect. We just have to try to be people others can count on.Because a team is only as strong as the people willing to work together. And when too many people stop showing up, it's not always the person who leaves who feels the biggest impact. It's often the people left behind trying to hold everything together.Let's chat!
